Official Recommendations
From Kris: I Wish You All the Best (2024)
Kris’s official recommendation this week is I Wish You All the Best, a coming-of-age/coming out story based on the book of the same name. In it, a high school student is cast out of his house for coming out and has to embark on his own journey of self-discovery. Kris thought this was a beautiful movie with some really good messages in it.
From Tara: Touch of Class by Rachel Spangler
Tara’s official recommendation this week is the third book in the In Sessions romances, Touch of Class by Rachel Spangler. This has all of Tara’s favourite things. It’s enemies to lovers with former high school rivals, it’s a workplace romance, it’s got cuddling! Tara doesn’t think you need to read the previous entries to like this one, but recommends the whole series. Check it out!

>> Kris Bryant: Welcome to Queerly Recommended, the podcast where we recommend queer books, films, TV shows and more. I’m Kris Bryant, a contemporary romance writer for Bold Strokes books. And this week I’m recommending a 2024 queer movie.
>> Tara Scott: And I’m Tara Scott and I review sapphic fiction, the lesbian review, and smart trashy books. And this week I’m recommending a romance that is part of a series that I really love.
>> Kris Bryant: Hey, I’m excited to hear.
>> Tara Scott: All right, Kris, it’s been a little while. What is up with you?
>> Kris Bryant: So Women’s Week is coming up.
>> Tara Scott: All right, remind everybody. For the people that don’t know, what is it on the back?
>> Kris Bryant: So Women’s week is a week long celebration in Provincetown. They actually start Saturday the 10th and goes through, I think the 18th or the 19th. I will be there Sunday to Sunday because my publishing company, Boldstrokes Books, does events at the town hall and the library where we are on panels. We discuss writing, we read from our books, fun things like that. So it’s a chance to. It’s more of a. It’s very intimate.
>> Kris Bryant: The thing I love about it is that you can see a reader and say, hey, you want to go grab lunch across the street? And then you find other people along the way and then you have a big group and you all sit around and eat, drink and be merry. It’s a lot of fun. I really, I enjoy it. It’s one of my favorite, places to go and I’m excited to go.
>> Tara Scott: And this episode is going to drop in the middle of Women’s week.
>> Kris Bryant: So if you’re listening to this, I’ll be there.
>> Tara Scott: Hang on. I too am in Provincetown. Find Kris, flag her down and tell her that you heard about that. You heard this episode. That’s what I wanted to say. Woof. It’s a Monday night, y’, all.
>> Kris Bryant: And it has been a long weekend for this girl right here. Because guess what else?
>> Tara Scott: What else?
>> Kris Bryant: I had a garage sale over the weekend. Another one?
>> Tara Scott: Yes, another one. All right. And are you going to the casino with the proceeds?
>> Kris Bryant: Maybe.
I don’t know. It turns out that I have to go to bridal shower on Saturday and somehow it came about that I like to gamble and so do the. So does the bridal party, I guess. So the bridal shower will happen. There’ll be cake and presents and everything. And then everybody will scatter and some of us will head to the casino and so yes, will I take the money sure. Because why not? It was a good amount. I had fun.
>> Tara Scott: I’m sorry. You had me at bridal shower Casino. Bridal showers are usually. I hate, I hate a baby shower. I hate a bridal shower. But you found a way.
>> Kris Bryant: No, I hate bachelorette parties like those. No thank you.
>> Tara Scott: I’ve never been to one. I didn’t have one and I’ve never been to one.
>> Kris Bryant: You see them all the time out and you see like, oh, on the
>> Tara Scott: little pedal bus things and whatever like that.
>> Kris Bryant: And you see like, you know, especially like if they’re, if it’s a, it’s a woman wearing a man, like they do the whole penis bracelet necklace thing.
>> Tara Scott: Which is why I’m so glad I didn’t have one.
>> Kris Bryant: Because I don’t understand it. I just, I don’t understand it. So I will avoid them all costs. Unless it’s like my friend and then I know, like, okay, like usually like my queer friends are a little bit more chill or we’re just gonna like get hammered or we’re gonna get high. Like that’s. That’s cool. That’s a bachelorette party. I don’t want to go to strippers. No, I don’t want to. I don’t want to see that. I don’t want to. Don’t want to hold anybody’s hair while they. Because they drink so much and they’re puke. No, Coyote ugly. Whatever the bar is of the year. Like, I just don’t want to do that. So I’m past that. But bridal shower will be like low key. I mean, I honestly don’t. I can’t remember the last time I was at a bridal shower.
>> Tara Scott: No.
>> Kris Bryant: And then all of a sudden like a couple of the friends are like, hey, like we’re thinking about going to the casino and we know that you like to go to the casinos and maybe we’ll all go to the casino. Maybe we will. That sounds like it.
So I have a funny story to tell you about my garage sale. All right, picture this. I have the cars in the very like front of the driveway. Because I’m building shit in that area. Because I’m putting together animal things. Like I, I got this bid and had a lot of medical equipment in it. So I’m putting together things. So I’m literally on my back, okay. And the cars are kind of blocking me from the street. So I’m on my back putting together some stuff and this car pulls up and I could just see them between the cars. It’s a dude in a white truck. Like, hello, welcome to Missouri. That’s every here. They all drive white trucks. Sure. And my neighbor across the street, you know, their house burned down on Thanksgiving. So they’re finally getting it wrapped up and ready to move back into. It’s been a year, but whatever. And so they’ve had a lot of activity over there, you know, trucks coming and going. So I’m not thinking of anybody other than some dude.
>> Kris Bryant: Hey, are you having a garage sale? And I look and I’m down and I look up and I kind of look backwards and I don’t really turn around, I just kind of lean back and I’m like, yeah, but tomorrow I come back tomorrow I go, is there anything you’re looking for? And he’s like, yeah, I’m looking for my mom. And I said, well, we have clothes. Well, no, here’s the funny part. So we’ll have, we’ll have clothes, we’ll have anything that, you know, she needs. Houseware, stuff like that, you know, Be here tomorrow at 8. And he’s like, okay. And he leaves. He’s wearing aviator sunglasses and everything. And at the ankle. And from as far away. I had no idea who it was. Turns out it was Deb’s son. He really was looking for her. I’m like, come back tomorrow. And it was kind of funny.
>> Tara Scott: Oh my God.
>> Kris Bryant: That’s been like, I’m looking for my mom. Like so many people, when I tell the story, they see it. It’s 50. 50. They see it the way I saw it versus the way you saw it.
>> Kris Bryant: So anyway, that’s kind of.
>> Tara Scott: I thought it was, I ah, was wondering if my mom was here.
>> Kris Bryant: Well, and that’s kind of what it was. But he just kind of gave me a weird look like, okay, that’s weird. How about you like pull over, turn off the car, get out of the truck and go talk to her instead of just like parking across the street, yelling at me, you know, it was weird. It was a whole weird experience. But it also made me laugh afterwards. And then he came by and we were laughing about it afterwards. But it was just kind of like you could have been anybody. You were any guy in the Midwest, right? White truck, like baseball.
>> Tara Scott: White. White dude in a. White.
>> Kris Bryant: White dude in a white truck.
>> Tara Scott: I mean, come on, that’s pretty good.
>> Kris Bryant: It was so busy. Like I have garage sales from like eight to two. Max. Like two o’. Clock. I’m done. I’m toast.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: This One until five. I had to kick people out. Why so busy? It was a beautiful day in Kansas City. Nobody has garage sales this late in the season. And everybody wants to buy shit.
>> Tara Scott: Oh, so you’re ready for Casino Day? Yeah, I’m ready for the Casino Day. Very good.
>> Kris Bryant: Here’s the funny thing.
So I, remember the first one I had this year. It was for me because Debbie didn’t want anything to do with it.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: She was actually gone that day. I said, please leave, because she hates it. She hates it so much. And so I’m like, hey, why don’t you go spend some time with the family and I’ll catch you later. And she’s like, cool. I’m out. So she leaves and then she comes back and she’s like, oh my God, you made a lot of money. I’m like, I know. And so she’s like, maybe I should do one with you later in the year. I’m like, all right. So same thing. Like, Same issues, same complaints, same everything. And I said, hey, why don’t you go spend some time with the grandkids? So that’s what happened. Like, I keep having them even though she wants to do them. And then she comes in and. And And then I give her half the money. So that’s how that works. Garage sales, they’re a thing.
>> Tara Scott: Uh-huh.
>> Kris Bryant: And my stuff is like real clean and nice and not dusty or dirty. And I sold so much. And everybody’s like, what did you sell? I’m like, everything I didn’t want. We just had so much stuff.
>> Tara Scott: That’s how you stay in a house, is getting rid of it every so often. We don’t do the yard sale thing. We just. We donate a lot. Like, but every probably, And occasionally we have to get junk haulers to take certain things because it’s just like, did not make it through the kids. But like, that’s why we’re able to stay in a house this size. Because every year or two, Neil does a big old pass through all the things we purge.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh, yeah. Big time. big time purse, you know, And. And yeah, stay in a small house. And we have a small house. So for sure, like. And Debbie had been working on the garage for like six months. And I finally. I’m like, I’m gonna push it all to the side. And we’re having a garage sale. So m. Hey, why not?
>> Tara Scott: It’s the way.
>> Kris Bryant: And guess what I’m addicted to now. Because we all know I have a Very addictive personality.
>> Tara Scott: What is it?
>> Kris Bryant: I, am addicted to Pokemon Go.
How?
>> Tara Scott: How did you get addicted to Pokemon Go in the year of Our Lord Beyonce, 2026?
>> Kris Bryant: Because life is right now. The world is in fire. And I.
>> Tara Scott: No, no, I know that part. But that game came out a long time ago, and now is when you’re getting addicted.
>> Kris Bryant: So a long time ago, I did start it, and it was so funny because I started it in 2016 with an AOL account. Thank you. What? And it was funny because that was back in the day when Pokemon Go, you had to chase after. You have to find them. You had to go and find them.
>> Tara Scott: Wait, you don’t have to anymore.
>> Kris Bryant: You don’t have to anymore. So they did that because people were dying. They were going into traffic, getting hit by cars and stuff, because they weren’t paying attention to what they were doing. They were falling down elevator shafts, manholes, because they’re trying to catch the Pokemon. So they’re so stupid. So back in 2019, I couldn’t access it because it was AOL, and that’s archaic and dead. So then I started up a new one, but I didn’t do anything with it because one of the. It was one of my engineer, Kris. We started it back up and then didn’t do anything with it. I only had, like, 100 Pokemon, and that was it, like, dead gone. And I’m not quite sure what triggered it, but when I went to Iceland, I was catching Pokemon. I was just like, I have no idea. I don’t know how to play it at the time. Like, this was, what, two months ago? So I didn’t know raids. I didn’t know any of the, like, rewards and stuff like that. Knew nothing. And Deb’s son has been playing it for 10 years, like, ever since it came out. So he’s like, top tier everything. He’s everything. You know, we kind of are getting advice because Deb does it, too, and we’re getting advice from them how to play Pokemon. And I’m. I’m level 40 now, which is great. And I do. There are several of us in the writing community who do play Pokemon Go. And I think that’s what triggered it. It was in 2019. I’m blaming Karen Callmaker for this. For me getting it getting back. And I think during the time that we were in, wherever we were in 2019, you know, for, Golden Crown Literary Society, I don’t remember what state, but it was during that week that I was catching them because everybody was playing Pokemon Go. And I hate to be. So that’s what it was. It wasn’t Kris. It was Karen Callmaker. So I’m calling her out, but I’m not going to tell anybody else who else plays it, because I need more friends on Pokemon Go. Because you give each other gifts and you get, like, rewards, and I need that. So I need you all to message me if you do play Pokemon Go. And let’s be friends so I can get more gifts and give you gifts, too. So anyway, it’s my new. My latest new addiction. Pokemon Go. Thank you.
>> Tara Scott: There you go. I tried it during the pandemic.
>> Kris Bryant: Did you?
>> Tara Scott: Well, because at that point, it was like we were going on family walks because, you know, when it was like, all. Everything was locked down, but you could go for walk. Yeah. And so we took the kids out to do it. And then I tried it for a little while. It was mostly me handing my phone over, but then I tried it, and I was like, hang on, this is. I’m outside. But I’m getting none of the mental health benefits of putting my device down while taking a walk. And so I put it down and did not come back.
>> Kris Bryant: Yeah, it’s, It is. It is a lot. But also, I’m very competitive. I know you know this about me. And so I actually got two Pokemon that Deb’s son has not caught in the 10 years he’s been playing, and I have two of them.
>> Tara Scott: No way.
>> Kris Bryant: Yeah. So I now have to catch all the ones that. That he doesn’t have, because now it’s a family thing, you know, like, that’s me. And Deb’s just as competitive as I am. So she. She started up, like, a couple weeks ago, and she’s, like, almost at my level.
>> Tara Scott: Whoa.
>> Kris Bryant: Yeah.
>> Tara Scott: Okay.
>> Kris Bryant: I know, I know.
>> Tara Scott: Wow. go down.
>> Kris Bryant: Too bad. I have to work. Anyway, enough about me.
Navigating Childhood Illness and Vaccination Discussions
What’s new with you? What’s going on?
>> Tara Scott: Okay, so you remember how last time I said that my kid went to school and already was homesick?
>> Kris Bryant: Yes. Yes. Guess who’s homesick again.
>> Tara Scott: Except this time. Oh, it was far worse. sure, what it was, but it’s. It has to be the flu or Covid. this child is still isolating and is on day 10.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh, my gosh.
>> Tara Scott: And it’s not even, like, at this point, I felt like I could feel something kind of, like, loosen in me, and I worried a little bit less, last night at bedtime when they were bratty to their sibling.
>> Kris Bryant: Go to bed.
>> Tara Scott: Right. Like, this is a Kid who typically, like, will catch a virus and then within a day or two, they’ll still be kind of like coughing and snotting. We’re like, go hang out in your room. And they’re like, I’m bored, I’m lonely. That didn’t start for. For days and days and days. And I was like, what is going on?
>> Kris Bryant: No.
>> Tara Scott: So yeah, we’ve all just been kind of waiting to see, like, oh no. Will we be the ones to. Nope. So far it doesn’t seem like it.
>> Kris Bryant: Good.
>> Tara Scott: And hopefully we’ll be able to go kind of back to school. But it’s. It’s kind of one of those. I guess the reason I bring it up is first of all, infuriating. Two viruses for the same kid in less than a month. But also, why do they not vaccinate all the kids before they go back to school or at least make it available? I know some families don’t want to vaccinate their kids for anything. But like, for the families that do want to do it, why not have a chance to before you throw all these kids together in a school?
>> Kris Bryant: Right.
>> Tara Scott: No, we’re just gonna let. And like, people are clearly sending their kids to school sick as hell.
>> Kris Bryant: Isn’t it so weird that like, it’s changed so much because of COVID The whole dynamics of, you know, being homesick from school is so different now than it used to be.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: Because I’m going to women’s week. I went and got Covid and the flu shot.
>> Tara Scott: Good for you.
>> Kris Bryant: All on the same arm on the same day.
>> Tara Scott: And I’m good for you. We’re going to get ours soon.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh, do you. Okay.
>> Tara Scott: I think they’re only just like within the next week or so they’re going to open up, the ability for you to go and book them. But yeah, we’re going to get them. Well, the three of us that are healthy are going to get them as soon as possible. We’ll see. For the other kid, not while sick, right?
>> Kris Bryant: Yeah. I mean, good. Like here. I live in Missouri. Nobody vacs anything for any reason, so it’s always available. You just walk right in and go get the jab and like.
>> Kris Bryant: Like, because nobody. Yeah, it’s. And it hurt.
I’m not going to lie. It hurt. This one hurt. I told her, I said, this one hurt.
>> Tara Scott: She goes, flu or Covid?
>> Kris Bryant: Both. But Covid hurt more like just because it just felt like ow.
>> Tara Scott: Really got in the muscle there.
>> Kris Bryant: Yeah. I mean, and she just said like, I don’t know. She just said a lot of people were saying that. Yeah, okay, she’s a terrible nurse, but.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah, but also possibly she was a terrible nurse who couldn’t say. Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: Who knows anymore?
>> Tara Scott: Oh, but in exciting news, the tiniest love of my life, little Mr. Henry Rollins. It’s his birthday this week.
>> Kris Bryant: Stop it. There’s no way that baby is one.
>> Tara Scott: He turns one on Wednesday.
>> Kris Bryant: No, he’s a m. Man. that’s seven years. Like he is a. He’s a kid.
>> Tara Scott: He’s a little is what he is. But he’s turning. Listen, I’m just annoyed because he ripped so we have carpet. Do you remember, do you remember how excited I was when we redid all the floors in our house?
>> Kris Bryant: Oh yes. Oh yes, I do.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah, he’s ripped a little. Like all the stuff out of the carpet in this one little circle right in the middle of the living room.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh my God. It can’t even be a corner. It’s got to be right.
>> Tara Scott: It’s right where anybody can see it.
>> Kris Bryant: Throw rug.
>> Tara Scott: That’s exactly what I said to Neil. I was like, I kind of think we should get a rug and just like put it over and then see what that happens. So.
>> Tara Scott: But he’s got that cute face. That cute face does a lot for him, you know?
>> Kris Bryant: I get it. Teddy’s the same way. It’s like m. It’s so funny because like he went from super cute fluffy kitten. Yeah. Didn’t he have like a weird alien looking face? Like he’s teenager, gangly, awkward young teenager. And now he’s an older teenager and he’s starting to look. His face is starting to look good. He’s growing into his features a little bit more. And he’s going to be beautiful. He’s super soft. He’s just going to be beautiful.
Kids. Cat. I’m surprised he’s not all over the place because it is cat demonium here.
>> Tara Scott: How’s he doing with orange and black kitties?
>> Kris Bryant: So I love it because orange kitty will grab him and clean him and he lets him cute. And he and black kitty are not hissing anymore. Like they, they have done nose to nose touches.
>> Tara Scott: Okay, progress.
>> Kris Bryant: Black kitty. It’s hard. Yeah, Black kitty’s just hard to like. He. He’s my fave. I mean, I’ll say it, I can say it here. Like they’re not.
>> Tara Scott: They can’t speak English.
>> Kris Bryant: The kids, they can speak English. Well, they can understand English. They can’t speak it, but they can understand it. But I will go Pick up black
>> Tara Scott: kitty when I get home, I’m like, but kitty.
>> Kris Bryant: So I pick him up and I pick him up and he drops his head on my shoulder. Like he puts everything into me and I just like, I’m like, how are you astray?
>> Tara Scott: Like, how would it give you?
>> Kris Bryant: Like, you’re just the best cat.
>> Tara Scott: And remember when you thought there was no way this cat will ever let me touch it.
>> Kris Bryant: I know, that’s so funny. Look at him. I know. I’m so happy. I’m so happy. But I can’t believe your boy is now like.
>> Tara Scott: I know. I said to, I, I was talking to Neil about it on the weekend. I was like, does this mean that we’re going to get an email from the vet’s office? That’s like Henry raw. It’s Henry Rollins, his birthday. And like, genuinely, oh my God. Name your pets after a celebrity. It’s the comedy gift that keeps giving throughout the year. It’s my favorite
>> Kris Bryant: m. I love that.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah, I love that. All right, Kris, what have you been reading or watching or all those things?
>> Kris Bryant: So a new season of Survivor started.
>> Tara Scott: You do like that show.
>> Kris Bryant: I do like the show and I always, you know, and I like, I complain about it so much because I’m like, okay, yeah, no, this is fake. This is stupid. What? No. And, but I watch it every time and I think it’s just because so many people in the family, it’s like one thing that everybody does, so it’s a good family thing, you know, I like it. It’s all right. It’s good. New season’s okay. There’s this one guy. You’re not going to believe this. There’s this one guy who was being an idiot with an axe or a machete and they literally macheted a quarter of his thumb off. Like off. Like you saw a little chunk of thumb and he’s like, I don’t want to go. You gotta like just. I like, I’m sure he had to sign a whole bunch of paperwork, everything.
>> Tara Scott: That man’s gonna get a gangrene.
>> Kris Bryant: Yep. He goes, you’re not. Well, like, I’m sure there’s a resort like 10ft away that they can go get and stuff like that. So I don’t think it’s that bad. But he, whatever, they kept him in the game, he was allowed to play. But I’m just like, what the. Like, that’s just terrible. And he is white dude. White truck.
>> Tara Scott: Yep. Aviator glasses, Aviator glass.
>> Kris Bryant: No, he’s not the. He’s not cool enough for he, you know, probably had the trucker’s hat and you know, he just, he, he would be the reason why. He would be the reason I choose the bear. Like, like he does not have a good vibe. And so, that’s just me. In my opinion. Only my opinion does not reflect the opinions of this show or of you or anything. But it’s my show too.
>> Tara Scott: So that’s fine.
>> Kris Bryant: That’s fine. He just, he comes across as just a bully, I think is what it is. He’s just a bully.
And so they let him stay. They probably. Well, look who’s here. Can you see the thing is shaking?
>> Tara Scott: I can.
>> Kris Bryant: It’s Teddy behind. Come here, come here. Cute. Oh, oh, look, look. You see his face? Oh, I can. Oh, let’s say hi. Come here, say hi. Boom, boom. Oh, oh, look at that. He’s gonna be beautiful. Oh yes, yes.
>> Tara Scott: Very cute.
>> Kris Bryant: Anyway, so Survivor started and then also, Traitors, a new episode of Traders started. I mean, queer and lovely. I love it. Absolutely love. Do not jump. No, he’s going to jump. There’s going to be loud noise. Nope. Come here. Get down, Traders. So, and then. Oh, football, like, football is good.
>> Tara Scott: Time again.
>> Kris Bryant: It’s that time again. I’m not even going to tell you about our record or any of the injuries that my team has had or any of the other teams because they have been brutal. So many players are getting hurt and it’s unusual, especially for this early in the season. It’s very unusual.
>> Kris Bryant: But football is keeping me busy. It’s like, Saturdays are Deb. Sundays are mine. I literally was watching football from 8:30 in the morning because they had a game in London until like 10 at night. Like it was the best day ever.
>> Tara Scott: That’s a lot of football.
>> Kris Bryant: That’s a lot of football and all right. It’s okay. It’s all right. It’s okay.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah, as long as you like it. That’s, that’s a great day.
>> Kris Bryant: I love it. It’s, it’s just, it’s unbelievable like how much I am doing worthless things. But you know, anything, anything but writing. You know me. I will find the excuse. Oh, Pokemon Go. Yeah, let’s do it. Raiders. Yeah, let’s go. Survivor. Of course. So I’m keeping myself busy, not writing, but I did, did I tell you I kind of had a breakthrough on the storyline?
>> Tara Scott: I think so. Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: Draper and I sat and talked it through and.
>> Tara Scott: No you didn’t. That’s exciting.
>> Kris Bryant: Yeah. So a Couple weeks ago, I went to the lake with kb and we worked through my issue of, why I was stuck, so.
>> Tara Scott: Oh, yeah, it worked out.
>> Kris Bryant: So that was good.
>> Tara Scott: Good.
>> Kris Bryant: My goodness.
I’ve been talking a lot. That’s okay. What have you been reading or watching or playing?
>> Tara Scott: Okay, playing. I’m still playing Power Wash Simulator, which I think is hilarious because it is very much job. The video game. But I gotta tell you, my friend did not lie. It is a relaxing game.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh, God.
>> Tara Scott: Like, it’s just. It’s such a chill. Like, if you just want to zone out. Although it’s. It’s also funny that they have. I forget what they call it, but they have a mode where you can either try to do it by, like, a certain amount of time or only using a certain amount of water. And I was like, why would I stress myself out? The whole point of this game is to not be stressed out. Why the hell. Oh, it’s challenge mode. I don’t want a challenge. I specifically got this game because I want no challenge.
>> Kris Bryant: Yes. None. Zippo.
>> Tara Scott: Nope. So that has been very fun. I’m nearly done the main game, and then they have a bunch of downloadable packs, and I’m gonna. Well, there’s also. They also have a bunch of, like, free downloads, too, which is kind of cool. Like, it’s nice to see a game do a lot of, like, extra free content. But I think when it’s time to pay for them, I’m hoping for a sale. But if there’s not a sale, I’ll pick them off one by one. And I think the first one will be the Back to the Future pack, because. Because that’s m. That’s the one I’m the most excited about. You get to clean the clock tower.
>> Kris Bryant: The flux capacitor. Right. Wasn’t that the flux. Of course.
>> Tara Scott: The DeLorean. Yep. Is of course there. So that’s been very fun. We’ve also been watching some movies. some we loved, some not so much.
And actually bailed on. So loved. We. Did I tell you that we watched Moonstruck?
>> Kris Bryant: maybe.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: A while ago, right? Was it a while ago?
>> Tara Scott: It was only. It was only a few weeks ago. And I checked the. I checked the outline from the last time we talked, and it wasn’t there. So we have been hanging out with our friends Ed and Carrie. He’s been listening to the show forever and ever.
>> Kris Bryant: So.
>> Tara Scott: Hello, Ed, if you listen to this one. But we’re kind of going back through the back catalog of, like, things that we’ve heard about, but never seen. So, like, Witches of Eastwick, we also
>> Kris Bryant: watched with them and went, that was the one. I remember.
>> Tara Scott: Yes, that was. That was the one. So moonstruck, though, with Cher. She got the Oscar for that.
>> Kris Bryant: Nicolas Cage, right?
>> Tara Scott: And Nicholas Cage, he’s a baby in. Was so good. Olympia Dukakis plays her mother. And I think we were just. Neil and I especially, we’re just. We went into it not knowing anything. It’s really good. It’s not. It’s not perfect, but, like, it’s. It’s so good. It still mostly holds up. And I wanted to see it because I think I told you I watched all the press for Devil Wears Prada, too, when I was, like, sick or had a migraine or something like that. And in one of the interviews, Anne Hathaway was asked, like, oh, what’s your comfort film? And she said, that movie? And I was like, okay, well, I’m.
I’m intrigued. I absolutely see why. Like, just the performances. Again, there’s something so charming about it. Speaking of Anne, Hathaway, she also, at one point was asked, what do you think is your most underrated film? And she said, oh. Or she. It was either that or she just volunteered at one point that she really loved the movie Colossal and she was sad it didn’t do better than it did. And we tried watching it. It’s from a decade ago. It’s the one with, like, her and Jason Sudeikis, and there’s, like, a Kaiju kind of monster, or I think that’s what it’s called. And a robot, like in Korea. And anyway, we. We bailed on that one. We didn’t love it. Her performance was very good, but, like,
>> Kris Bryant: these people are not. Yes, These are not. Yeah. So it says, Gloria moves back to her hometown and realizes her drunken blackouts physically manifest as a destructive monster halfway across the world. I do remember that. You’re right. It was very hard to follow.
>> Tara Scott: It was. It was just weird. It was hard to follow. And also, the movie doesn’t. And, you know what? It’s 10 years old. I don’t care if I spoil this point for some people.
>> Kris Bryant: Right.
>> Tara Scott: Jason Sudeikis is the bad guy, and he’s not set up as the bad guy. And he just gets progressively meaner. And we were like, no, this is too mean. So we didn’t love it.
And then the other night, I got baked and we watched Conan the Destroyer, and that was very fun. The sequel to Conan the Barbarian, I
>> Kris Bryant: was going to say, which One Conan the Destroyer.
>> Tara Scott: That’s the second one, the only thing. So it’s, it is kind of batshit insane. It is another like Conan going to like foil some kind of a cult. But like for different, you know, different setup, different reasons.
>> Kris Bryant: But.
>> Tara Scott: Oh, so the first one was like rated R. Titties all over the place. We had that weird sex scene with the witch. Other just like a whole bunch of real weird. This one they decided to make PG13 sex scene, cut out titties. Nowhere weirdly, I think it kind of took the teeth out of the movie a little bit because there was something so singular about the first one where some. And I’m not saying that I needed to see like a bunch of topless women. Like that wasn’t the point, but it was almost like they were going for something. They were going for something anyway, I guess is what I’ll say. And m. I’m sure that movie not
>> Kris Bryant: sexualizing women or something, maybe, I don’t know.
>> Tara Scott: Well, I guess they were trying to reach a wider audience with the second one, but it made it almost more cartoonish. It felt like something that could have been turned into like a kids TV show.
>> Kris Bryant: It’s Grace Jones in it.
>> Tara Scott: Grace Jones was probably my favorite part. Yeah, she was in it and she played like a warrior. And Wilt Chamberlain was in it. He was huge. I didn’t realize he was over 7ft tall. Like he makes Arnold Schwarzenegger look tiny. Arnold is wider. Like he’s m. Kind of more built.
>> Kris Bryant: Is he even that big? Huh? Six foot Arnold Schwarzenegger?
>> Tara Scott: six two, according to the Google.
>> Kris Bryant: I call bullshit.
>> Tara Scott: Well, to be fair, I probably didn’t make it past the AI overview. I’m part of the problem.
>> Kris Bryant: I’m actually looking it up too. Let me tell you, it’s hard to spell his name. Yeah. Six foot two. That he shrank to about six foot one. The dude’s maybe five, five. I don’t know. Maybe he is that tall.
>> Tara Scott: I don’t know.
>> Kris Bryant: Anyway, well, he plays in like all those movies where they’re like super big buff dudes like the Expendables or something, I don’t know. But he doesn’t look very big in that one. No.
>> Tara Scott: Well, and I think like when you get somebody who’s almost a full foot taller than him, like, yeah, they found the one person on earth who could make him look dainty. Right.
>> Kris Bryant: Well that’s true too.
>> Tara Scott: And I’m almost done reading a book, that’s quite fun. A friend recommended it to me, it’s called the Sterling cup by Brie Fowler. I think she’s a pretty new indie author. Okay.
one of the characters is Maddie Sterling. She is a producer on a reality TV show. Kind of like one of those messy, messy dating on an island kind of M shows. She is on location, nearly done wrapping for the season, I think. Then she races back home to corporate Tornado island, which if I understand correctly is around the San Diego area. And because her mother, she thought, was on her deathbed, her mother was faking it. She hadn’t been home in 15 years, but. And she thinks her mother is dying, but it’s because there’s this thing. Well, it’s called the Sterling cup and it’s something that her mom always puts on every year. It’s like two days of games with like different families that they’re friends with. It’s like a whole sort of event. And she’s like, look, I’m recovering with the bruised tailbone. You need to go plan this whole thing out. And you’re going to do it with Aspen. Aspen. They were rivals in high school. She’s a physical therapist who is helping her mother. And Aspen always had a crush on Maddie in high school. And Maddie was never smart enough to figure it out. She just was always like, why is she always coming for me in these? I think they were both on debate team or something. She’s like, why is she always trying to be better than me? Because she has a crush on you, dumbass. So they have to plan this thing together. It’s like, oh, just had to go a little bit further in the description. it’s basically like a three day beach Olympics like that their family puts together. And so it’s this like former high school rivals thrown together to plan an event. One of them hates the other one. The other one thought she was over
>> Kris Bryant: her crush, but she’s not. But she’s not.
>> Tara Scott: It’s very, cute. I’m really enjoying it. I’m looking forward to seeing how it ends. I’m having a good time with it. And it’s on Kindle Unlimited, so if you have KU and not a lot of budget, definitely recommend go checking that out. All right. Kris, your son is unruly.
>> Kris Bryant: And yeah, I thought, I thought this would be okay. I thought I had the door open. He’s not going to try to like it’s bang down.
>> Tara Scott: I think it’s funny, I had to
>> Kris Bryant: catch the computer just now so it wouldn’t fall and shut us down. Oh, looking at Me like what, you’re
>> Tara Scott: doing your own Olympics over there at your place with this cat?
>> Kris Bryant: Look, he has this thing.
>> Kris Bryant: He chews cords. That’s his thing. Like, I mean, yes, he’s destroyed all the furniture as kittens do, but he is addicted to cords, so. Yeah. Like, why isn’t the sound bar working anymore? Oh, because Teddy chewed through it. So it’s a whole thing. Like we have.
>> Tara Scott: How are you gonna protect the Christmas tree this year?
>> Kris Bryant: I, I dread the Christmas tree. I mean, I. He’s trying to get in the Lego, thingy. Anyway, he’s a hot mess.
>> Tara Scott: Hey, Kris, what’s your official recommendation?
>> Kris Bryant: Let’s do that. Yes, thank you.
My official recommendation is a movie. I think it’s from 2024. It’s called I wish you all the best.
>> Tara Scott: Okay, tell me more. I don’t think I recognize this name.
>> Kris Bryant: See, adapted from a book written by a non binary author. M. All right, so Mason Dever. Deaver. Dever. I think it’s Dever wrote and directed, or wrote. I’m sorry, wrote this. And then a trans woman, Tommy Dorfman, directed and produced it. M. Okay, so kind of here’s the synopsis. After being kicked out of the house by their parents, a teen embarks upon a journey of self discovery that teaches them about love, friendship and family. So can we talk about the cast? Because you need to hear who the cast is. Like.
>> Tara Scott: Okay.
>> Kris Bryant: Okay, so let’s get started. I had to, I had to type it out because there’s so many people in here.
>> Tara Scott: Sure.
>> Kris Bryant: Okay, so Alexandra Daddario. Alexandra Daddario, she’s been a lot of movies. She was in, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the San Andreas Fault movie with the Rock. She was in Baywatch. She’s like at the. She’s really beautiful brunette with really bright eyes. Blue eyes.
>> Tara Scott: And really looking her up. Oh, yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: Okay, her. Yeah. So she plays Bea’s sister. her name is Hannah, who takes, them in, so. Lena Dunham.
>> Tara Scott: Okay.
>> Kris Bryant: Is the art teacher who helps be adjust to a new school and teaches them how to, express themselves better.
>> Tara Scott: Okay.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh, you cute little wallflower. Let’s like help you break free. Do you know who Cole Sprouse is?
>> Tara Scott: The name sounds familiar.
>> Kris Bryant: You should know because this kid, well, this, it’s. It’s a man. It’s a man now, but played in, the twin. He and his twin played in the Disney. The Suite Life on Deck or something like that.
>> Tara Scott: Oh, my kids never got into that. But he was in Riverdale.
>> Kris Bryant: Yes, he was Jughead in Riverdale.
>> Tara Scott: Wait, he was apparently also on Friends as who?
>> Kris Bryant: He was Ben. What? He’s Ben?
>> Tara Scott: No.
>> Kris Bryant: So, so he plays Hannah’s husband.
>> Tara Scott: So he grew up.
>> Kris Bryant: And let me see, who else is there? There’s also, you remember I. I recommended 911 Lone Star a while back because it’s a great TV show and it’s all queer people. Like, Rob Lowe was the only straight person on that show, basically. So the counselor, who gives Bea a job in this movie is Brian Michael Smith. Trans, Trans man. And like the whole thing, there’s so many queer people in this movie. It’s just fantastic. I love it, love that. It’s just so cool to see these actors, you know, playing themselves. I mean, like who they are true to their, to themselves as characters in this, in this, movie. Allies in this movie. I just love that they. It just, it worked. It really worked. She got a good, good taste of everybody in this movie.
>> Kris Bryant: So the main character, Corey Vogel. Manis. Manis. Vogel. Manus. Like I’m butchering names tonight. It is Monday. Forgive me. Yeah, but I’m like, I know that. I know this kid. I had seen him before and I’ve seen them in something recent. So I’m like, what is it? And I’m like, they’re in my life at the Walter Boys.
>> Tara Scott: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: Plays a queer kid. Plays one of the Waltons. Walton. Walter Walton. He’s not a Walt Walton, he’s a Walter.
>> Kris Bryant: Because I’m like, I know this kid. I know this kid. This is such a good, like, I know this. But anyway, so a lot of like the cast is phenomenal. Like really? I was like, okay, I’m in. Because I love everybody in the cast.
>> Kris Bryant: Like we all love a good coming out story. Like that’s just. We all want that for all the young queer kids. We do. Yeah, we, you and I talk about it a lot, how that’s not always the case and not everybody has the same outlets that, that other people do. And like we want the parents to cheer and have a party like, hey, or grandma throws a coming out party. But that’s not the case in this movie. But, but it’s still a good story to know.
>> Tara Scott: Okay.
>> Kris Bryant: I call it meaningful representation.
>> Tara Scott: Okay.
>> Kris Bryant: Thank you.
>> Tara Scott: Thank you.
>> Kris Bryant: It’s not the fairy tale coming out story, like I said, that we all want, but it’s the worst case scenario sort of kid comes out, says, hey, I’m non Binary. And the parents kick them out. Like no shoes, clothes on their back.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah. Like if you look at the youth homelessness rate, there’s a reason why so many of them are queer.
>> Kris Bryant: Exactly. So what they’re able to do is they call somebody on the phone, come get me. And you don’t know who it is. You just know. Are you okay? I will be there right away. And it turns out it’s Hannah. They called their sister and their relationship is estranged. I guess they hadn’t spoken in years and years and years. And it’s all because they have terrible parents who lied about everything. So it’s one of those. And so there’s a seed. It’s great. Where they’re like mom and dad and they’re like screaming it and they’re, you know, it’s very like now it really works. You should try it, you know, because she’s got her shit together and she, baby, she’s got a husband. Try to make it work. And all of a sudden, you know, now we have a sibling moving in and like, it changes the whole dynamic and it’s just a lot of stress. And so she’s trying to deal with it all. And so they’re in the car and Bea’s like just yell. And so they start yelling mom and dad. And then she joins it and it’s great. Anyway, it’s good. I consider this movie a hopeful queer trauma.
>> Tara Scott: Right. So it starts with. It starts with trauma, but it, it
>> Kris Bryant: starts with trauma after that. And I understand what you just said. Not everybody has somebody living somewhere where they could take them in or help them out. That’s why homeless is such a. For the queer kids. It’s such an issue.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: The one thing I liked was that Bea was able to find a place to really cocoon and grow. Their sister is in a bigger city. So the Thomas who is Hannah’s husband. Works out of high school and takes B to the high school. Enrolls. Enrolls them in the high school and just kind of like has this kid like, hey, take him. Take. Take Bea around and you know, help them out as best you can. And so like, it’s just so. It was so nice just to see finding their true authentic self. And then the ending of the movie is great. I mean there’s. It’s just a continuation. You know, it’s like I am growing, I’m evolving. You know, queer people evolve. They, you know, find out things that you like, you figure things out. This is, you know, I want to Be this or I feel like I’m this. And they explain very much how they don’t feel one way or the other. I don’t feel like I’m a boy. I don’t feel like I’m a girl. You know, there’s really good explanation and the sister like, let’s sit down and talk this through. So I really loved, loved her role in this, in this movie. So. There were some triggers, of course, but I thought it was a really good movie. that I think everybody could get something out of it. And it’s still positive. It’s still a positive movie.
>> Tara Scott: It sounds like you really enjoyed this one.
>> Kris Bryant: I really did. I. I really did. I enjoyed. Like I said, I was really enthralled with the cast because I’m like, oh my gosh, everybody’s gonna bring something.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah.
>> Kris Bryant: The only person who kind of disappointed me was Lena. I think that maybe she overdid it. Maybe as the art teacher who’s like awesome and helpful and stuff. It was just kind of like the magical art teacher.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah, they always. A little bit magical and thinking about the art teacher in Heartstopper.
>> Kris Bryant: Yes, that’s true. So you know, M. Yeah, it’s always the art teacher.
>> Tara Scott: It’s either an art teacher or an English teacher. It’s got one of them.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh yes. Oh yes, for sure. So, yeah. So that was my, official recommendation. I wish you all the best. Which is a very great line from the movie. And when you watch it, you’ll be like, bing, I get it. Fantastic. So I recommend that. That’s my official recommendation. What about you, Tara? What is yours?
>> Tara Scott: All right, so mine is a, the most recent release from actually one of your friends, Rachel Spangler. It’s called Touch of Class.
>> Kris Bryant: Nice.
>> Tara Scott: I gotta say, I loved this one. So Jillian DeGarmo, is she like. She’s really got her shit together. She’s in her very early 40s. She’s running this successful psychology practice. She, she is a practicing psychologist, but she’s also kind of like the boss and the person who runs the office where her friends work. Except, you know, one day she comes in the building and somebody is moving. well, no, hang on.
She gets notified that there is somebody moving into the space across the hall. They have had the luxury of having this space to themselves for a long time. It’s clear she doesn’t really love change. And she’s like, what do you mean? What do you mean? We’re going to have to share a waiting room. And of course the Building owner is like, look, you’ve just had it really good all this time with nobody else wants the space to get over it. And so she’s coming in one day and all she sees is this, like, big old bed mattress, sort of like partway in the hall, partway in an office. And she helps kind of wedge it. She helps the person who is clearly moving into space, she can’t see who it is, get it in through the door. And of course, an accident happens and either she lands on this person or
>> Kris Bryant: this person lands on her.
>> Tara Scott: And it is her high school arch nemesis.
>> Kris Bryant: Oh, no.
>> Tara Scott: I know. It’s. Isn’t that funny that, like, reading two books with that kind of high school rival situation? But they are. It’s funny. Despite that being like kind of a similar thing in the setup, these are. They are very quite different books. So that’s Daphne Miller. And even worse, it turns out, because she’s like, what are you doing with your business? She’s a professional cuddler and she’s opening something called a snuggery.
>> Kris Bryant: A snuggery?
>> Tara Scott: Yep.
>> Kris Bryant: I love it.
>> Tara Scott: Yeah, it’s so good. And so Daphne is bubbly and, you know, loves to make jokes and connects with people and just like the absolute opposite of Jillian, who’s very button down and straight laced. And what does the literature have to say that and all, you know, these kinds of things. And really has a hard time getting over the fact that, like, she touches people for money. It’s not sexual, but still it’s this, like, is this even real? What does the literature say about this? Like, what is that all about? But her friends, Jillian’s friends, like Daphne and pull her into the friend group and pull her out to do things. And so, yeah, it’s this, like, opposites attract situation. So this is the third in the series that takes place in the psychology practice in Buffalo, New York. So like I said, Jillian is the boss. And so the two protagonists of the last two books, Informed consent and relationship material, are very good friends and. But also like, her employees. And so I was really excited to get her taken like her book because she’s always been kind of the grown up in the room. Even though she’s working with other grownups, she’s still the one who’s like, very, like, serious by the book. We have to do all these things. And so she goes from this, like, absolute ultimate boss. She has her shit completely together. And then she starts to just unravel because, like, she. What do you mean? I have to be around this person who makes me so annoyed and then it’s like oh no, I feel other feelings that are not annoyed and they’re in my pants, what am I going to do?
And ah, the blurb. The blurb refers to her as an ice queen and I sort of see why. I also feel like she doesn’t necessarily fit with the traditional typical ice queen thing because ice queens, it’s a tricky one. I’m trying to figure out how to talk about this without spoiling too much. She does have good friends and I don’t feel like with most ice queen romances I’m used to seeing like oh, and they, they have a lot of good friends that they’re quite close to kind of around them. And also I think typically with ice queens there is a certain element of power. Oh, yeah, you know, she’s, yes, she, it’s her practice but usually it’s a certain power and also kind of like a certain echelon within society typically in ice queen books. So to me my take is instead just that like she’s just very by the book. She has a plan. This is my five year plan. This is what I’m going to achieve in life and I’m laser focused on it and nothing is going to pull me off this path except maybe you know, falling on an arch nemesis on a mash apparently. Yeah, they are, they are super different. You know, Jillian being so uptight, so cerebral and Daphne being so feelings forward and kind of the opposite.
>> Kris Bryant: That’s knuckle.
>> Tara Scott: And she also, you know, she’s also finding herself like she loves to get on Jillian’s nerves. She loves to poke, poke, poke and does it kind of as often as she’s able to. And like as a. Fair enough. Like she’s annoyed at having to defend what it is that she does for a living because she’s had to do it so much for so long and yet you know, she’s quite good at it and people, you know, come and find her and it’s funny the book doesn’t get into it but I’ve been doing a lot of like learning about how do we do good things for our nervous systems and like touch is one of them. Like if you can, if you can get like a 10 or 20 minute cuddle in, it can like bring your heart rate down. It can have all these sort of health benefits. So I was like, yeah, Jillian, get into it. What the hell? How do you not know about somatic practices Psychologist.
So I thought they both had pretty, pretty great character arcs, especially Jillian, because she is so focused on, like, what is the plan? And so for her, it’s like, okay, this is where I think I’m gonna be in five years. This is exactly what I’ve. I’ve been following it. I’ve been on the path. It’s like, okay, that. That was the plan. Does it always need to be the plan? Right. What do you actually want to do? And in Daphne’s case, she is new to Buffalo. She’s rebuilding her life in a new city because there was a thing that happened in the last city where things weren’t going kind of the best. And it, really left her kind of questioning her own judgment and what, you know, is she doing right by her family? And so the other thing I adore about Daphne, I thought this was so cool. She has a daughter, and I think she might be. I can’t. I can’t remember for sure, but it sounded like she was maybe legally married, but to her best friend, who he’s also gay. The idea being that they both wanted to have a kid. So, they found a way to have a kid together. And I think they might have gotten married just for, like, the legal protection. If I’m remembering this correctly. I read it a few weeks ago, so I apologize for not going and digging into that aspect. But they have this, like, super unconventional setup, but it works really well for their little family because they each. It was so cool. I don’t think this is actually, like, a real spoiler because it’s just they. They have this house together. They each have one floor of the house. Their daughter, her room always stays the same, and there’s, like, two other bedrooms, so they can, like, they flip who is living with their daughter that week, and the other one goes and lives on the other floor.
>> Kris Bryant: Wow.
>> Tara Scott: Okay. And so that way, it’s always stable for the daughter. And the thing that I loved about that is that it was a really great reminder that, like, there’s just different ways to family.
>> Kris Bryant: Right, Right.
>> Tara Scott: Including in Queer Community. And I love that because you have, like, literally, you have that.
And then also the found family that is, like, the people working in this practice together and who they’re, you know, who they’re in romantic relationships with and all of that. And so I was really, really, really happy to see the characters come back. This was my favorite book in the series for sure, hands down. I think you could probably read Touch of Class without having read Informed Consent or relationship material. But I also feel like I loved it so much because I was coming back to a familiar location, right. And seeing familiar characters and getting to know the character that I’ve been two books. What’s she like? What’s her story about? And so I think if you really wanted to, you could just dive in right here. But for me, it just felt like the biggest gift to get to come back to these characters. And I. I also didn’t know the book was coming out. I just somehow stumbled on it. I was like, oh, this is out. And I went and immediately bought it. Like I said, I have to know what is up with this. It was a warm hug. It was nearly impossible to put down. I think I read it over a day and a half. What? I put it down at a respectable
>> Kris Bryant: bedtime only to pick it up immediately in the morning.
>> Tara Scott: I get up at the same goddamn time every day now, which is so annoying. But it turns out you really do fix your sleeps. If you have problems sleeping, the way to fix your sleep schedule is to get up at the same time every day. It’s not about when you go to bed.
And so isn’t that annoying? And it works. I hate that it works. Kris. I get up at 6:30 every day now.
>> Kris Bryant: I hate it.
>> Tara Scott: And it works. I have fewer migraines. So as a result of that, I did have to knowing I was getting up at 6:30 the next day. I did have to put my Kindle down at a respectable time the night before, but I immediately picked it right back up and I just kept reading until I was.
I like broke for meals, but I didn’t stop until I was done.
>> Kris Bryant: It’s nice.
>> Tara Scott: So good, so fun. I love the characters. I love the way they all love each other and the way they all show up for each other. So yeah, it’s called Touch of Class. Very much recommend it. All right, that is all for this episode. Thank you so much for joining us. If you’ve enjoyed it, you’re probably already subscribed on your podcast app, but maybe not.
